DISTRICT 5040 OUTBOUND TEAM TO LOS ANGELES DIARY

2006-04-15

Departure Day, The adventure begins!

The D5040 GSE team all meet at the Alaska Airlines desk at Vancouver International airport. Neil arrived carrying the most important luggage of all; his golf clubs. Our send off committee consisted of GSE Chair Bob Blacker, Jeannette MacKay, and Jean's family. Once through US Customs we stopped for one last Timmy's before our departure.

As our aircraft was taxiing out to the runway were treated to one last Vancouver shower. The rain was literally like a sheet of water running off the fuselage.

Upon arriving at sunny LAX we were greeted by a large group of Rotarians. Rotarian David Bohn had arranged to use a large passenger van - borrowed from a fellow Rotarian. The van had somewhat of a checkered past as it had been previously used twice before on Rotary Functions. The first time came back with a flat tire and a bend rim. The second time it was stolen. This is now the third time however the owner felt it would be okay because it was now protected by a Police escort.

David shuttled us to the Masonic Hall in Santa Monica for a welcome banquet. Robyn commented on how the drive was almost surreal - kept expecting to find ourselves inside a TV show. Mexican dinner hosted by Rotary Santa Monica Club. The club members were very hospitable and made us feel at home.

After the dinner we were farmed out to our host residences. Michele is hosted by Judy Neveu, Jody and Robyn by David Bohn and I by David Rimer. Tomorrow is a free day and the real works starts on Monday.
